Smoke Signals

Turning fine cigars into ash since 1985

Opus Petit Lancero and Fonseca Porto Bin No. 27

The Cigar:

Length: 7 1/2 inches

Ring Gauge: 39

Wrapper: Dominican Rosado

Binder: Dominican

Filler: Dominican

This cigar had about 6 years of age on it. I received it in an auction for the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation.  This was not a production Opus. It had a pigtail cap and was a good inch and a quarter longer longer than what is available commercially.

The cigar had mellowed a bit with age but the characteristic spice was still present. The smoke was cool and smooth the entire time I smoked it. The cigar produced plenty of smoke and burned razor sharp. The wrapper was perfect in color and texture. The construction was firm and the cigar had an easy draw.

This was the perfect smoke to end a Saturday evening and a good match with the Fonseca Porto.

The Wine:

Fonseca Bin No. 27 was first created over a century ago by the Fonseca family for its private consumption. It was released commercially in 1972. It does not require decanting or aging. It’s ready to drink right from the bottle.

It is a smooth ruby port with just the faintest bite from the  brandy. It is a very fruity port and you can taste the cherry and blackcurrent on the finish

This is an excellent after dinner wine and goes well with a cigar.

  1. This is a cigar I am just “jonesing” to try! Thanks for reviewing it. Heck, I would pay extra for that additional six years of aging.
